Lahaina Wave Turquoise Fabric
Aloha to Lahaina on the island of Maui, once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The Lahaina Wave blanket salutes the islands and surfers, then and now. In 1779, the log of Captain Cook’s expedition ship HMS Discovery recorded the first European written description of Hawaiian surfing. By then, surfing was art and popular sport among native Hawaiians. Chiefs or kings were proud to show their mastery of the waves, and surfing was known as the “sport of kings”. The design of this blanket combines traditional tribal inspired designs from the mainland with undulating waves of blue and turquoise representing the waves of the beaches near Lahaina – and every surfer’s dream. The wave images are outlined in a sawtooth design that evokes the power and challenges of the surf.
